<takes a deep breath in> AHHHHHHHGGGGGRRRRRRRRAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry. I had to get that out.

I lost my flash drive. LOST. IT. Gone. Poof. Vanished into thin air. I remember exactly where it was when I last saw it, but it's not there now.

<puts hand to forehead and shakes head>

And of course, I hadn’t backed it up in a month because I am a master procrastinator. I have since added it to my to do list every week. Luckily, I was only doing significant work on one project, but for course it is the one that is due at the end of the month. My submission for the Writers of the Future contest. Also luckily, I had literally just printed out the newest draft for a beta reader. So, I do have it. It’s just frustrating.

I am not a person who loses stuff. Misplace for a few hours, sure. But to outright lose something? Never. After it happened, I tore my place apart, cleaning out my car, took everything out of my bag. Nada. It’s days later, and I find myself still looking for it. I keep expecting it to turn up either in a place I’ve looked a dozen times, or some place completely unexpected like the freezer (it’s happened).

I have figured out how to turn on the accessibility mode on my laptop, which enabled talk to text in Word. It is not perfect, but it is still faster and more accurate than me typing. (I decided it would be faster to re-type the entire thing because it was so different than my last saved draft) It won’t be as painful as it could have been, so I count that as a win. In fact, this may become a permanent part of my procedure for typing things that I wrote out by hand.

So, happy accident.

Have you ever lost a draft? I’d be curious to heard from you.
